Studies investigating the long-term outcomes of CI reported varying educational and occupational results. While five studies found that CI users underperformed academically compared to their peers with typical hearing, one study reported average academic performance in CI users on par with their typically hearing counterparts. In terms of career outcomes, one study revealed that CI users achieved lower occupational levels compared to the general population. This review identified several factors that could improve outcomes, including earlier age of implantation, bilateral implantation, long-term CI usage, higher parental educational levels, and placement in mainstream educational settings.

Limitations of this review include the small amount of research on occupational outcomes. Additional research is needed to investigate long-term CI outcomes.
