There is reasonable evidence from high-quality single subject experimental designs indicating that a combined treatment approach using symbolic gesture and verbal training improves spoken language production of nouns and verbs for individuals with stroke-induced aphasia. Further research is warranted to determine the benefits of symbolic gesture training in isolation for individuals with aphasia, and whether a combined treatment approach of gesture plus verbal training is more effective than verbal training alone.
