The included studies demonstrated that comprehensive approaches (e.g., phonics instruction combined with direct instruction) and single-skill approaches (e.g., sight word recognition only) were effective in teaching reading to students with intellectual disabilities. Results also demonstrated that students with intellectual disabilities typically require a lot of time and intensive practice to acquire various reading skills.
