This systematic review investigates the generalization of functional communication training (e.g., across contexts, stimuli, or individuals) and the strategies used to decrease challenging behaviors in adults and children with multiple disabilities.

Nine studies examined specific tactics used to transfer the effects of functional communication training to different settings, stimuli and/or individuals. The findings revealed that functional communication training alone or in combination with various tactics (e.g., use of sufficient stimulus exemplars, incorporation of functional mediators, use of functional consequences) was, at times, sufficient to produce generalization (e.g., decreasing challenging behaviors with functional mands). However, given the small literature base, additional research is warranted.
