This systematic review investigates the diagnostic accuracy of the short-form versions of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Although speech-language pathologists do not diagnose dementia, findings from this review may be useful for identifying tools for detection of cognitive impairments in adult populations.

Various versions of a short-form Montreal Cognitive Assessment (SF-MoCA), such as the 5 minute-MoCA and mini-MoCA, were reported to have differing test items, application, and test properties; therefore, available shortened forms of the MoCA were deemed not interchangeable. Although high heterogeneity was reported, available versions of SF-MoCA demonstrated a pattern of high sensitivity and lower specificity, with corresponding high negative predictive value and lower positive predictive value. These findings suggested potential clinical utility as a cognitive screening tool, but the target clinical population would inform the choice of SF-MoCA.
