Fifteen studies investigating functional communication training (FCT) demonstrated that FCT is an established treatment with a moderate level of evidence for decreasing challenging behaviors (e.g., aggression, self-injury, disruptions) in children, birth to 8-years-old, on the autism spectrum. In the majority of the studies, a therapist or researcher implemented FCT; however, in other studies, coached parents and teachers demonstrated fidelity in implementing FCT.
