This is a consensus guideline providing recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in children. Although the diagnosis and treatment of GERD is outside the scope of speech-language pathologists (SLP), this guideline provides some recommendations that may pertain to the SLP's scope of practice.

<div>The following recommendations about the safety of thickeners were provided:</div> <ul> <li>Due to rising concerns of arsenic exposure, using rice cereal thickeners with low or no arsenic is recommended.</li> <li>"Carob bean thickeners are approved for use in infants after 42 weeks gestation. Xanthum gum thickeners are approved for infants greater than 1 year old because of concerns of necrotizing enterocolitis" (p. 534).</li> </ul>
