This review examined both non-invasive (e.g., oral motor and behavioral therapy) and invasive (e.g., medication, injections, surgery) treatments for the management of sialorrhea. Overall, the literature supports the short-term efficacy of oral motor and behavioral interventions (e.g., cuing, prompting, reinforcement techniques) to initiate swallowing and reduce drooling frequency and severity. However, no studies identified sufficient long-term effects. Given that this review was limited to studies published in English and only provided a broad overview of the treatment effectiveness and side effects, further research in this area is warranted.
