Percentage of data points exceeding the median (PEM) was used to objectively measure the effects of reading comprehension interventions. Preliminary findings indicated that the following intervention approaches improved reading comprehension in students on the autism spectrum:

visually-cued instruction (PEM = 0.98);

meta-cognitive strategy instruction (PEM = 0.94);

collaborative strategies (e.g., peer-tutoring; PEM = 0.86); and

technology-assisted instruction (PEM = 0.86).

"An additional two approaches - adapted text and behavioural strategies - though less extensively utilized within this dataset, were also identified as potentially assisting in the improvement of reading comprehension scores" (p. 13).
