This systematic review investigates the diagnostic accuracy of the nursing delirium screening scale (Nu-DESC) in assessing postoperative delirium. Of note, although speech-language pathologists (SLPs) do not diagnose delirium, SLPs may administer delirium screening tools as part of a multidisciplinary effort to prevent and manage delirium.

Studies showed the following psychometrics for the Nu-DESC when used to detect postoperative delirium in hospitalized adults:

pooled sensitivity of 0.73;

pooled specificity of 0.93;

positive likelihood ratio of 10.2;

negative likelihood ratio of 0.29;

pooled diagnostic odds ratio of 35; and

area under the curve of 0.94.
