The majority of studies included in this review focused on behavioral interventions or psychoeducational interventions for caregivers. Additional research examined the efficacy of cognitive rehabilitation interventions for individuals with dementia in general and not those with Down syndrome. Within these studies, it was found that caregiver education programs had a positive impact on caregiver knowledge and feelings of ability to influence negative behaviors in individuals with Down syndrome and dementia. Limited evidence was noted for the positive effects of behavioral intervention on the presence of inappropriate behaviors. Due to a paucity of research, no recommendations for or against cognitive rehabilitation for adults with dementia and Down syndrome can be made as a result of this review. Further research is needed.
