National Clinical Guidelines: The Diagnosis & Management of Stroke and Transient Ischaemic Attack

This consensus-based guideline provides recommendations for health care workers in primary and specialist care settings on the diagnosis and management of adults with strokes and transient ischemic attacks. Only those recommendations relevant to the practice of speech-language pathology will be included in this summary.

<div>Care should be provided in a specialized stroke unit. A multidisciplinary care team of professionals should include access to speech-language pathology services including assessment and treatment of swallowing.</div>

<div>Hospitalized stroke patients should be kept nil per os (i.e., nothing by mouth) until swallow screening is performed. After screening, if a swallowing disorder is suspected, specialist assessment should be conducted as soon as possible, within 24 hours.</div>

<div>Stroke rehabilitation should be provided by a specialized team that is part of the multidisciplinary team. Individuals with neurological deficits following acute stroke should be assessed by the rehabilitation team within a specialized stroke unit. Those individuals should be transferred to a rehabilitation facility as soon as investigation of stroke etiology and acute care is complete [R-GDG].</div>
