19 studies; 12 assessments

<div>Of the 12 non-instrumental assessment tools examined, only two (the Bedside Swallowing Evaluation and the Volume Viscosity Swallowing Test) were validated with critically ill or hospitalized patients.</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div>Limitations to this review include a small number of studies found examining dysphagia in ICU patients, heterogeneity of the assessments included, and the exclusion of single test items. Further research is warranted to determine the validity of non-instrumental assessments for identifying post-extubation dysphagia in this population.</div>
