For elderly patients with aspiration pneumonia, this review found that initiating oral intake earlier after hospital admission decreased adverse effects (i.e., prolonged treatment, decline in swallowing ability, and lengthier hospital stay).

For elderly patients with aspiration pneumonia, this review found that dysphagia rehabilitation increases the proportion of patients able to return to oral intake when discharged. Modified food textures were reported to improve swallow safety in direct swallowing exercises.

For elderly patients with aspiration pneumonia, the authors indicated that oral care combined with dysphagia rehabilitation may reduce recurrence of pneumonia.
