Findings demonstrated a correlation between malnutrition and/or significant weight loss and consumption of traditional texture modified diets (TMDs). However, when interventions were used to improve TMD quality (e.g. fortification of nutritional content and/or improvements to texture, shaping, molding, and appearance), positive changes in weight, strength, and risk of malnutrition were noted in comparison to traditional TMDs. Mixed results were noted for intervention TMDs regarding overall mealtime satisfaction, however improvements were generally noted. Additionally, patients with free water access had a significantly higher level of satisfaction regarding oral hygiene, thirst, and drinks overall. Lack of reporting regarding dysphagia status, heterogeneity regarding study design and populations studies and reduced quality of included studies were notable limitations of this review. Further research is indicated.
