For adults with impacted cerumen, ear wax removal methods of ear irrigation (syringing) or mechanical methods (e.g., microsuction, probes, forceps) are generally considered to be effective, but evidence is limited. Depending on patient characteristics, these methods do present with increased risk of damage to the individual's ear canal or tympanic membrane. Very weak evidence was found indicating the use of wax softeners, either alone or prior to irrigation, may be better than no treatment.
