For children with cochlear implants (CI), the authors found improved quality of life (QoL) outcomes, as reported by the child's caregiver(s), that correlated with early implantation and daily use of the CI device. Early development of hearing skills, auditory speech perception, and language skills in children post-CI also correlated with statistically significant QoL improvements across the majority of studies, though these outcomes were not statistically significant in all studies. The authors noted an absence of research on the correlation between other variables (e.g., family permeability, parental education, socioeconomic aspects) and QoL for children with CI. Due to the complex interaction of interpersonal factors and the use of parent reported QoL, additional research on variables that result in improved QoL for children with CI is needed.
