Data from two studies showed that otoacoustic emissions (OAE) screening demonstrated a sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 90% for identifying sensorineural hearing loss in children recovering from meningitis. While the authors note that OAE is a "sensitive, feasible, and reasonably specific" (p. 5) hearing screening tool, they conclude that "the present literature is not technologically sufficiently updated to clarify whether OAE screening should be implemented as a standard screening protocol in all patients recovering from bacterial meningitis" (p. 6).
