The psychometric properties of instruments assessing cough impact or quality of life in individuals with chronic cough are as follows:

Audio and video recordings devices are highly valid cough frequency measures using human count as the reference standard, at least in a laboratory setting; however, findings also suggested cough frequency only moderately correlated with cough impact, or quality of life.

The Leicester Cough Questionnaire and the Cough-Specific Quality-of-Life Questionnaire may be valid instruments for assessing the impact of cough in adults.

The Parent Cough-Specific Quality-of-Life Questionnaire may be a valid instrument for assessing the impact of cough in children.

Although commonly used to assess cough, there is currently insufficient data to determine the validity of Visual Analog Scale scoring.
