Findings demonstrated that interruption and redirection interventions were associated with a reduction in stereotypic behaviors in 90% of participants (i.e., individuals on the autism spectrum). Interruption and redirection interventions were effective in reducing vocal stereotypy in 75% of cases and in improving appropriate vocalizations and functional engagement in 28% and 55% of cases respectively. However, of note, these effects generally only occurred for short periods of time within the contexts of the intervention session, without any evidence of generalization in the absence of treatment or maintenance across sessions.
