A systematic review of the literature identified 24 dyadic communication instruments for assessing communication in individuals with dementia and their caregivers. Across the included studies, all 24 instruments received low psychometric quality scores. The Behavioral Observation Scoring System (BOSS) received the highest score (total score = 7) having been tested for the most psychometric properties (i.e., interrater reliability, predictive validity, convergent validity). The authors found that "all included instruments are in the initial stage of instrument development and were tested for limited psychometric properties. Over half of all the included instruments were reported in only the original development record with limited psychometric testing, and no further testing or use of the instruments was identified" (p. 66). Further research on the psychometric properties of these instruments is required.
