Findings demonstrated improvements in discourse production and the production of trained sentence and verbs in isolation following sentence treatment in most individuals with aphasia. Mixed results were noted for generalization to untrained verbs in isolation, with improved outcomes noted at the untrained sentence level. Greater evidence for generalization was noted for verb network strengthening treatment. Limited evidence to support the use of sentence treatments for the improvement of functional communication was additionally noted. Limitations to this review included small sample sizes and reduced methodological rigor of included studies, heterogeneity between studies, and potential for risk of bias. Additional, high-quality research is needed to determine the efficacy of sentence treatments for this population.
