One study investigating the the efficacy of tinnitus retraining therapy for individuals with tinnitus "showed that tinnitus retraining therapy of varying duration is beneficial for treating tinnitus of varying severity, and is more beneficial for treating severe tinnitus than mild-to-moderate tinnitus. Furthermore, 12 months of tinnitus retraining therapy was more effective than 3 and 6 months of therapy. In this study, tinnitus masking therapy was more effective than tinnitus retraining therapy in the short term (3-6 months), but this was reversed at 12 months and significantly so at 18 months. Thus, tinnitus retraining therapy should be used as a long-term therapy" (p. 1032).
