Preventing Cognitive Decline and Dementia: A Way Forward

This guideline provides recommendations for treatments used to prevent cognitive decline in individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia. The recommendations are based on the Agency of Healthcare Research and Quality systematic review by Kane et al., 2017. The target audience of this guideline includes physicians, healthcare professionals, patients and carers. Of particular interest to speech-language pathologists are the recommendations pertaining to cognitive training.

<div>Cognitive training which includes interventions aimed at enhancing reasoning/problem solving, memory and speed of processing skills is "supported by encouraging although inconclusive evidence" (p. 6). While there is insufficient evidence from randomized controlled studies to justify the widespread adoption of specific cognitive interventions, healthcare provides should be aware of the potential cognitive benefits of this intervention to prevent or control the cognitive decline in individuals with MCI or dementia.</div>
