Practitioners should always assess across subject areas, such as reading, math, and writing, when evaluating students with attention deficity hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and carefully evaluate whether academic functioning would benefit from interventions for ADHD. "If indicated, make referrals for further specialty assessments such as psychology, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, psychiatry, or other medical specialists" (p. 9).

Individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) should be screened for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and vice-versa. Treatment of ADHD in individuals on the autism spectrum can be beneficial to overall functioning.
