This updated guideline from the American Geriatrics Society provides recommendations regarding feeding tube use in individuals with advanced dementia.

For individuals with advanced dementia, "efforts to enhance oral feeding by altering the environment and creating individual-centered approaches to feeding should be part of usual care" (p. 1591). All healthcare team members should "promote choice, endorse shared and informed decision-making, and honor individuals’ preferences" (p. 1592) and incorporate any previously expressed wishes regarding tube feeding into the care plan.
