76 studies with 110 measures

Findings demonstrated clinical utility for the following assessment types to detect executive function deficits in children and adults:

Performance-based measures, which directly assess EF performance within the context of naturalistic iADL activities, were useful for the early detection of executive dysfunction and for the detection of pre-clinical EF deficits.

Virtual-reality based assessments were sensitive for the detection of cognitive and EF deficits within the context of iADLs.

Although most of the included studies focused on adult populations, the authors did not perform sub-group analysis to determine the impact of age on test validity. Limitations to this review include the lack of gold-standard assessment for EF within the context of iADLs and heterogeneity of EF skills assessed.
