This guideline provides recommendations for the assessment and treatment of children and adolescents on the autism spectrum.

"The clinician should maintain an active role in long-term treatment planning and family support and support of the individual" (Clinical Guideline; p. 252).

"Clinicians should coordinate an appropriate multidisciplinary assessment" for children on the autism spectrum (Clinical Standard; p. 244).

If screening identifies characteristics of autism spectrum disorder, children should undergo a thorough diagnostic evaluation (Clinical Standard; p. 243).

"Communication is a major focus of intervention and typically will be addressed in the child's individualized educational plan in coordination with the speech-language pathologist" (p. 245).

"The clinician should help the family obtain appropriate, evidence-based, and structured educational and behavioral interventions for children" on the autism spectrum (Clinical Standard; p. 244).
