Clinical Practice Guidelines for Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Tinnitus in Japan

This guideline from the Oto-Rhino-Laryngological Society of Japan provides evidence-based recommendations on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with chronic (persisting for three months or longer), non-pulsatile tinnitus.

For treating chronic tinnitus in individuals, the following treatments within the scope of audiology receive the following levels of recommendation:<ul> <li>Educational counseling is strongly recommended with moderate evidence (Recommendation 1B).</li> <li>Music or sound generators are recommended with low evidence (Recommendation 2C).</li> <li>Hearing aids for tinnitus accompanied by hearing loss are strongly recommended with strong evidence (Recommendation 1A). </li> <li>Cochlear implants for tinnitus accompanied by profound hearing loss are recommended with low evidence (Recommendation 2C).</li></ul>

For diagnosing chronic tinnitus in individuals, the following tests within the scope of audiology are recommended:<ul> <li>Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI);</li> <li>pure tone audiometry;</li> <li>pitch match test; and</li> <li>loudness balance test (Recommendation 1B).</li></ul>
