Findings demonstrated that cochlear implantation (CI) performed better in 13 of the 15 reported outcome measures when compared to stapedectomy. CI demonstrated easier access to area of cochleostomy and easier insertion of electrode bundle while also demonstrating lower rates in postoperative complications, facial electrical stimulation, post-operative hearing loss, and/or need for revision surgery. Additionally, CI resulted in greater recognition of monosyllables and phrases, improved postoperative pure tone average, and higher patient satisfaction rates. Comparatively, stapedectomy demonstrated greater outcomes for recognition of disyllables and speech reception thresholds. Small sample sizes and reduced methodological rigor are limitations to this review. Further research regarding the efficacy of CI versus stapedectomy in this population is warranted
