This consensus guideline provides recommendations on the diagnosis and management of individuals with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. This guideline was updated from the 2-part document from Bushby et al. (2010).

"Direct physical, occupational, and speech and language therapy should be provided in outpatient and school settings and continue throughout adulthood, augmented by therapies provided during hospital admissions and at home" (p. 257).
As dysphagia is common and frequently progressive in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, anticipatory screening and assessment should be done on a regular basis. "The speech-language pathologist should be consulted for a comprehensive assessment, including a videofluoroscopic swallowing study" (p. 262).
