This systematic review and meta-analysis investigates the effects of vocabulary interventions for children ages 2 to 18 who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH).

Findings demonstrated that vocabulary interventions for children who are deaf and hard of hearing were associated with:<br /> <ul> <li>improved expressive and receptive oral vocabulary, with a benefit of multisensory approaches;</li> <li>improved sign vocabulary, with a potential benefit of using digital devices;</li> <li>improved written vocabulary with co-speech signs; and</li> <li>no improvement in general vocabulary for interventions using video with subtitles.</li> </ul> However, these results should be interpreted with caution due to small sample sizes within various meta-analyses and a lack of clearly defined or valid control groups. Further research is indicated.
