Recommended Procedure: Cochlear Microphonic Testing

British Society of Audiology. (2019).

Berkshire (United Kingdom): British Society of Audiology, 1-17.

This guideline adapts and updates the British Society of Audiology (BSA) 2011 document "Guidance for Cochlear Microphonic Testing". This current BSA guidance provides recommendations about the use of cochlear microphonic testing as an additional measure of auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder. The following summary highlights broad areas to consider. For detailed, step-by-step directions for conducting cochlear microphonic testing, see the BSA's full text document.

Per British Society of Audiology (BSA) recommendation, this document on cochlear microphonic testing should be read in conjunction with the BSA "Guidelines for the Assessment and Management of Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder in Young Infants;" see Associated Article below.

When conducting cochlear microphonic testing, audiologists should provide parents, caregivers, and individuals information and counseling to support shared decision-making regarding hearing assessment, technology, and anticipated outcomes.

For newborns demonstrating an absent or abnormal auditory brainstem response and absent otoacoustic emissions, cochlear microphonics testing should be considered as an additional measure for diagnosing auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder. See the British Society of Audiology full text for detailed description for conducting and interpreting cochlear microphonics testing.
