This systematic review investigates the Mini-Cog as a screening tool to help detect Alzheimer's disease and related dementias in a community setting. Although speech-language pathologists do not diagnose dementia, findings from this review may be useful for identifying tools for detection of cognitive impairments in this population and referral for diagnostic work up.

Results indicated the Mini-Cog (sensitivity: 0.76-0.99, specificity: 0.83-0.93) has potential benefit in distinguishing between individuals with moderate to severe cognitive impairment when compared to individuals with average cognition in the community setting, especially when settings offer limited time or resources to clinicians. No studies met inclusion criteria for a meta-analysis.
