Randomized controlled trials
13 total studies included. 12 studies included in the meta-analysis.
<div>A network meta-analysis of studies found that vocal function exercises (VFE) improved maximum phonation time (MPT) in adults with dysphonia. VFE demonstrated clinically meaningful change and had the strongest outcomes compared to other voice treatments. Other direst and indirect approaches (e.g., abdominal breathing support, resonant voice therapy, stretch-and-flow phonation, vocal hygiene) demonstrated no significant or clinically relevant treatment effects for MPT. </div>

<div>The authors note high heterogeneity across the included studies, a limitation of studies published to only English and German, and a lack of research on the duration and dosage of treatment. Additional research on other voice treatments and populations with specific voice disorders is warranted.</div>
