Examining the Content and Outcomes of Training in Dysphagia and Mealtime Management: A Systematic Review Informing Co-Design of New Training

Findings demonstrated positive outcomes in increased knowledge, improved implementation of mealtime recommendations, decreased incidence of pneumonia for people with dysphagia, and increased staff confidence to varying degrees for participants receiving mealtime assistance training. Improvements in the mealtime experiences, health, and wellbeing of people with dysphagia was additionally noted in one study. Improvements were maintained for at least 1-month following training, and for up to 10 months for liquid viscosity modification, however degree of accuracy in performing training skills can progressively decline over time. There were no reported negative impacts of the training.
