<div>Findings regarding orofacial myofunctional therapy (i.e., isometric and isotonic exercises aimed to strengthen orofacial muscles, activities focused on tongue posture and swallowing, and correcting open bite) included improved swallowing function and tongue strength in individuals with atypical swallow. One study of children with comorbid speech sound disorders showed no improvements to sibilant production. When used in combination with orthodontic treatment, five studies showed OMT led to improvements for outcomes including tongue posture and strength, swallowing pattern, and oral habits.</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div>Limitations to this review include that this review provides only "a broad overview of myofunctional therapy in atypical swallowing" such that "its scope does not allow for causal relationships to be established" (p. 17).</div>
