This is a guideline providing recommendations for the initial imaging of patients with symptoms of dysphagia.

For the initial imaging of patients with unexplained oropharyngeal dysphagia, a modified barium swallow may be appropriate if structural abnormalities have already been excluded by direct endoscopic visualization.

For patients with oropharyngeal dysphagia with an attributable cause, a modified barium swallow test is an appropriate initial assessment by a speech-language pathologists and allows for the assessment of various maneuvers and consistencies to initiate treatment.
