Cochlear implants were found to be an effective treatment for developing listening and spoken language in children with hearing loss when coupled with speech-language interventions. Children who received cochlear implants:

exhibited significantly lower linguistic and educational development than their peers with normal hearing, but were able to match them over time;

obtained more accentuated results (syntax and vocabulary) the earlier surgery was carried out;

achieved listening and spoken language skills within the normal range with increased cochlear implant experience; and

demonstrated listening and spoken language development that was better than users of conventional hearing aids.
