This systematic review investigates the effects of vestibular rehabilitation treatments (e.g., adaptation, substitution and habituation) on balance symptoms in individuals with unilateral peripheral vestibular hypofunction, excluding benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, Ménière's Disease, or central vestibular disorders.
Vestibular rehabilitation interventions, including adaptation, habituation, substitution, or a combination of these exercises, were effective for treating individuals with unilateral peripheral vestibular hypofunction. Given the heterogeneity of treatments and outcomes used to measure improvements, the evidence does not indicate whether any one of these vestibular rehabilitation treatments or a combination of exercises was more effective than the other treatments. Further quality research is warranted.
