Mixed findings were reported for telepractice versus face-to-face screening and assessment for the identification of speech sound disorders in children. Specific findings included:

Findings from case histories, parent and clinician-reported intelligibility ratings, and comprehensive speech samples were comparable between telepractice and face-to-face modalities.

There was reduced agreement for some aspects of oral muscular assessment screening (e.g., tongue movement and agility, diadochokinesis) and for the identification of specific consonant errors.

Accuracy of telepractice screening and assessment may increase with the use of adequate lighting, lapel microphones, moveable cameras, and/or care partners/facilitators present during the session to ensure optimal camera placement.

Limitations to this review include limited available research, small sample sizes, and the reduced methodological rigor of included studies. Additional research is indicated.
