Findings suggested that individuals on the autism spectrum generally preferred SGDs (35 of 44 participants) compared to PECS (7 of 44 participants) and manual sign (1 of 44 participants). Only one participant did not prefer any intervention.
Generally, speech generative devices (SGD) were associated with improvements in requests/mands and communication skills (Range of effect sizes= 0.68-1.0) in children on the autism spectrum. Use of Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) was associated with improved requestung, vocalizing, and motor imitation (Range of effect sizes= 0.91-0.97). Manual sign was associated with lesser effects overall (range of effect sizes= 0.37- 0.91).
