This systematic review and meta-analysis investigates screening tests for dementia. While these tools are not used by SLPs to diagnose individuals with dementia or mild cognitive impairment (MCI), the findings may be helpful to clinicians conducting cognitive assessments or considering referral for dementia workup.

Findings indicated that the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCa) performed best in detecting MCI with sensitivity of 0.89 and specificity of 0.75.

Although the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) is the most studied screening instrument for dementia, several other adequate instruments exist. The Mini-Cog and Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination-Revised (ACE-R) outperformed other instruments found, in terms of diagnostic accuracy.
