Findings indicated that the individual guidelines presented a coherent and systematic assessment process, but the varied recommendations between guidelines could make complex and confusing. The review argues that, "clinical guidelines for autism diagnosis illuminate the process of diagnosis as social rather than straightforwardly clinical, and that judgement is required to consider a number of sometimes contradictory and complex social factors" (p. 21).
