Eleven of 21 studies examined the use of assistive technology to improve social interaction, speech, and communication skills for children on the autism spectrum. All studies found positive results after assistive technology training. However, the wide range of technologies found (e.g., tablet-based visual scripts, voice output communication aids, avatars, social robots, video self-monitoring), small number of participants included, and methodological concerns warrant further research on the use of assistive technology with this population.
