Of the studies assessing the diagnostic accuracy of esophageal visualization, esophageal abnormalities were detected approximately half of the time when visualization was included as part of the modified barium swallow study. Further research is needed to examine the correlation of oropharyngeal findings with co-occurring or primary esophageal dysphagia and to develop a protocol for the standardization of esophageal visualization as a component of the swallowing assessment in adults at risk for dysphagia.<br />
