Treatment for Dysphagia (Swallowing Difficulties) in Hereditary Ataxia

Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews

Vogel, A. P., Keage, M. J., et al. (2015).

Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, 11, CD010169.

This systematic review investigates the effectiveness of dysphagia intervention (e.g., enteral and parenteral feeding, surgery, pharmaceutical interventions) compared to no intervention on primary (i.e., presence or absence of aspiration or penetration) and secondary (i.e., nonoral feeding, lower respiratory tract infection, self-reported symptoms and quality of life) outcomes in individuals with swallowing impairments secondary to hereditary ataxia.

No randomized controlled trials were found addressing dysphagia intervention for individuals with hereditary ataxia; "the absence of high quality evidence prohibits the development of any clinical recommendations specific to hereditary ataxia" (p. 7).
