Movement Disorders

Fox, S. H., Katzenschlager, R., et al. (2018).

Movement Disorders, 33(8), 1248-1266.

This systematic review updates a previous 2011 review; it investigates the effect of various pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatments for individuals with Parkinson's disease. Although much of the review is out of the scope of speech-language pathology, some conclusions are provided which are pertinent to voice and swallowing treatments.

Previous review to December 31, 2016

Randomized controlled trials

143 new studies (since previous review)

<div>In this review, a new study was found investigating the use of visual biofeedback in swallowing intervention for dysphagia in individuals with Parkinson's disease. Although the study reported positive results, it was of low quality; "therefore further studies are required" (p. 1260). However, evidence is still insufficient in this area for treating motor symptoms in PD. Overall, speech-language pathology services were considered "possibly useful" (p. 1252).&nbsp;</div>

<div>No new studies were found regarding voice and speech therapy since the previous review. The previous review concluded that Lee Silverman Voice Treatment was "possibly useful" (p. 1259) in improving speech and voice outcomes for people with Parkinson's disease, and that conclusion remains.</div>
