The following interventions demonstrated positive gains for correct verbal and gestural responses and the imitation of conversations (e.g., number of word use, requesting turns, making choices by asking questions or requesting) in children on the autism spectrum: <ul> <li>token reinforcement;</li> <li>verbal phrase;</li> <li>adult-mediated strategy;</li> <li>naturalistic; and</li> <li>analogue.</li> </ul> Results indicated the implantation of reinforcements were effective in increasing language skills in young children on the autism spectrum, but the extent of generalization of language skills was unknown due to the limited number of follow-up studies.
