Some studies reported positive findings for the effect of intensive interaction treatment on improved social interaction and engagement for individuals with profound intellectual disabilities or on the autism spectrum. However, the limitations of the methodology and design of the studies, small numbers of participants, and lack of maintenance or consistency of effects, prevent any firm conclusions about the use of this intervention. Further research is warranted.
